Policemen To Undergo Psychiatric Test
The Inspector-General of Police (I-G), Mr Solomon Arase, has said that the Nigeria Police Force is considering conducting psychiatric test on recruits and serving officers.
Arase stated this at the Nigeria Police Force Health Policy Revalidation meeting in Abuja, yesterday.
He said that the initiative became necessary following incidents of indiscriminate use of firearms by personnel of the force.
The I-G said that in adequate manpower had exposed officers to working for longer hours.
He said that the force was also considering establishing a Trauma Centre for its officers because of the nature of their job.
“The Police should be concerned about the mental health of officers,”he said.
It would be recalled that Arase had advised Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) to always determine the mental awareness of officers before assigning firearms to them to curtail incidents of ‘accidental discharge`.
He said that inadequate health workers, poor funding, infrastructure deficit and management deficiencies had been some of the challenges inhibiting the force’s medical unit.
Arase noted that in order to tackle these challenges, it was expedient to develop a health policy for the force.
Meanwhile, Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG), Mr Bala Hassan, in charge of Zone 2 Command, Lagos, has attributed the low crime rate in Lagos and Ogun states during the Yuletide to effective planning.
Hassan told newsmen in Lagos that the trend would continue as the aim was to ensure that police presence was more visible than in the past.
“We attribute the low crime rate during Yuletide to preparation because if one plans rightly, definitely things will work out well.
“Weeks before the Yuletide, the Inspector-General (I-G), Mr Solomon Arase, called us to Abuja where we held a meeting to review our plans for the Christmas and New Year celebrations.
“He gave us necessary direction which when we got back to our various bases we implemented them all.
“We called the Commissioners of Police, the Area Commanders and the Squadron Commanders.
“We fine tuned the instructions the I-G gave us about prompt response to distress calls and visibility policing. The I-G wants police to be everywhere,’’ he said.
Hassan also said that the Lagos State Government had contributed to the low crime rate during the Yuletide by donating patrol vehicles to the command.
The AIG added that motorcycles were given to the police by good spirited members of the public to be utilised with the vehicles to provide adequate protection during and after the Yuletide.
He said that some of the vehicles were sent to the highways to ensure robberies were checked and that the people travelling were safe.
