FG May Prosecute Nnewi Gas Company Over Explosion
There is indication that the
Federal Government might prosecute some officials of the Gas Plant whose tanker exploded in Nnewi on the eve of Christmas, resulting in the death of several persons.
The Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, who deopped this hint while inspecting the scene of the accident in Anambra State suggested that the loss of lives in the accident could have been avoided if the water sprinklers installed on the premises had worked on the fateful day to put out the fire.
“I am told that one safety check for this gas plant is from sprinklers on top of where you are gassing so that in case of anything, the sprinkler will automatically sprinkle and put off the fire and cool the gas plant”, said the Minister.
He said, “if there are lapses, they will have to correct them, otherwise, we will have to prosecute them”.
He remarked that will no longer stop at creating jobs for Nigerians but will also make sure that when people are given job whether in public or private sector, the job is safe, workers are paid well.
“And to protect workers and look after the risk of health hazard, you must put some safety checks”, Ngige said.
Racting also to the issue of industrial safety, for workers, the Managing Director of the Nigerian Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF).
Mr. Abubakar Munir, said it was important for employers of labour to register their workers with the fund and pay their contribution as enshrined in the enabling laws.
“It is always very good to register and make sure they pay the contribution as stipulated by law because we don’t know what will happen. Nobody is safe, it could be in a second; even in a normal office atmosphere, something can happen.
“So, obviously this registration is very important. That is the reason why we are emphasizing that everybody must register”.
The Managing Director of the company, Engr. Louis Ilozie, told the Minister that the company was able to ensure workers and customers were not affected by the gas explosion.
He said the company would provide the necessary details on the explosion to facilitate government’s investigation of the root cause of the gas explosion.

Dangote Refinery Resumes Gantry Self-Collection Sales, Tuesday
This is revealed in an email communication from the Group Commercial Operations Department of the company, and obtained by Newsmen, at the Weekend.
The company explained that while gantry access is being reinstated, the free delivery service remains operational, with marketers encouraged to continue registering their outlets for direct supply at no additional cost.
The statement said “in reference to the earlier email communication on the suspension of the PMS self-collection gantry sales, please note that we will be resuming the self-collection gantry sales on the 23rd of September, 2025”.
Dangote Petroleum Refinery also apologised to its partners for any inconvenience the suspension may have caused, while assuring stakeholders of its commitment to improving efficiency and ensuring seamless supply.
“Meanwhile, please be informed that we are aggressively delivering on the free delivery scheme, and it is still open for registration. We encourage you to register your stations and pay for the product to be delivered directly to you for free. We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your understanding,” it added.
It would be recalled that in September 18, 2025, Dangote refinery had suspended gantry-based self-collection of petroleum products at its depot. The move was designed to accelerate the adoption of its Free Delivery Scheme, which guarantees direct shipments of petroleum products to registered retail outlets across Nigeria.
The refinery stressed that the earlier decision was an operational adjustment aimed at streamlining efficiency in the downstream supply chain.
