Ex-Militants Protest Non-Payment Of Allowances
A group of Niger Delta ex-militants stormed a branch of Heritage Bank located at Olu Obasanjo Road, in Port Harcourt, to protest the irregularity in the payment of their amnesty allowances.
The Tide’s source gathered that the ex-militants, who arrived at the bank in the morning, created commotion and obstructed traffic on the road.
Their presence was said to have scared customers who ran to a safe distance and watched them display their grievances.
The protest was said to have stemmed from complaints that the bank was yet to pay their allowances for about five to six months.
It was further gathered that about 4180 of the ex-militants allocated to the bank were yet to receive their allowances.
One of them who pleaded anonymity said that they would continue the protest until they received all their owed allowances.
“We are very angry with what the bank manager is doing. She said that my account was not credited, but when I visited a different branch they confirmed that the money was in my account, but referred me back to this branch of which she refused to pay me”, he said.
“Instead of paying us she asked us to write our names, adding that she would give each person three thousand naira for transport which we refused”, he said.
