A lecturer, Dr Ifeannyi
Atueyi, has called for empowering pharmacists with the tripod of professional, clinical and leadership competence.
Atueyi, a lecturer in Department of Pharmacy, University of Benin (UNIBEN), made the appeal at a programme marking the department’s 36th Annual Pharmacy Health Week in Benin.
He said that strengthening the capacity of pharmacists would enable Nigeria to effectively handle emerging challenges in health care delivery.
In a keynote address with the theme, “The Pharmacists: Built for Global Challenges’’, the don said that the pharmacists had evolved beyond just being a dispenser of medications to a vital healthcare team member.
To this end, Atueyi recommended three approaches towards building a formidable pharmaceutical manpower for current global challenges.
He said that the first approach was a pragmatic review of the pharmacy training curriculum and teaching model.
According to him, this is with a view to acknowledge emerging trends and incorporating topics that will address broad-based needs for enhancing pharmacists training.
He said the second was to build the academic workforce capacity in our institutions and secure appropriate funding and resources that would ensure that pharmacy students are holistically trained and exposed to cope with emerging trends.
The don said that presently many departments of pharmacy in higher institutions in the country were either understaffed or ill-equipped.
Atueyi listed the third approach as the most important which required individual pharmacists to build on the foundation being laid by the current contents of the pharmacy programme curriculum.
“This they would do by observing and gaining deeper understanding of emerging trends, so they can prepare for likely challenges and also learning how to manage and adapt to new trends in healthcare.
“They would do also by strengthening their ability to distinguish between mere feds and important trends and also analysing national surveys and data that suggest emerging trends,” he posited.
Meanwhile, the Edo Chairman of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN), Mr Chris Iyare, also called for the urgent strengthening of the existing laws guiding and regulating the profession in the country.
Iyare, who was honoured with an award of excellence at the occasion, said the call became necessary in view of the activities of fake dealers of pharmaceutical products across the country.
He said the society had set up pharmacy inspection committee and task force on fake drugs and regulatory control in conjunction with the National Agency for Drugs and Regulatory Control as part of effort to stem unwholesome activities.
