Nigerian Politics Dominated By Undemocratic Govts -Okoko
A renowned academic and social activist, Professor Kimse Okoko has blamed Nigeria’s political woes on the prevalence of undemocratic governments in its leadership succession.
Okoko, who spoke as the Guest Speaker at a Special inaugural lecture held at Aztech Arcum event centre, Port Harcourt, as part of activities for the swearing-in of Barr. Nyesom Wike as Rivers State Governor, said the unfettered incursion of the military in governance undermined democratic principles in the nation’s political leadership.
Speaking under the Theme, “Democracy and Good Governance: Towards A New Rivers State”, Okoko, who is the Pro-Chancellor of the University of Uyo, listed some of the challenges of Democracy in Nigeria to include, weak institutions, ethical crisis in public service and lack of separation of powers among the different components of government.
Okoko also flayed the anti-corruption posture of successive Nigerian governments, a situation, he said, had created “a paradox of excessive wealth and poverty in Nigeria”.
