NDIC Wants NYSC Members In Financial Inclusion Campaign
The Nigeria Deposit
Insurance Corporation (NDIC) has called on members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) to assist in sensitising Nigerians on financial inclusion.
Head of the Research, Policy and International Department, NDIC, Mr Kabir Katata, made the call at the public awareness outreach to corps members at Kubwa Camp in Abuja on Monday.
“Deposit insurance all over the world has a problem of poor awareness; so we try as much as we can to enlighten people and one of the medium we advocate using is the NYSC.
“(This is) because they get posted to several places and communities and we want to use that medium, so that when they go, they can also help us in enlightening people on the need for bank accounts.
“And the fact that when you open an account and keep your money in that bank, your deposits are safe and NDIC is there to ensure that the bank is safe and your money is also safe.
Katata said the NDIC would work closely with the CBN to ensure that deposits by customers were safe and the banks were also in good conditions.
According to him, only 35 per cent of Nigerians had bank accounts and the remaining 65 per cent were unbanked, meaning that if they needed loans, they could not get them.
“The Micro Finance Banks are also very good components for financial inclusion as it is an avenue for people to bank more.
“So, while you go to your working places, we will advise that you talk to your friends that NDIC will ensure that their money is safe,’’ he said.
Katata also said that the corporation embarked on periodic surveys which they did sometimes through consultants to check the level of impact of the various awareness programmes.
He said recommendations of the respondents were used by the corporation to improve and target other areas where more awareness were needed.
One of the corps members, Mr Paul Adejo, told newsmen that he was happy that the NDIC came to deliver the lecture on deposit insurance.

BVN Enrolments Rise 6% To 67.8m In 2025 — NIBSS
The Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System (NIBSS) has said that Bank Verification Number (BVN) enrolments rose by 6.8 per cent year-on-year to 67.8 million as at December 2025, up from 63.5 million recorded in the corresponding period of 2024.
In a statement published on its website, NIBSS attributed the growth to stronger policy enforcement by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the expansion of diaspora enrolment initiatives.
NIBSS noted that the expansion reinforces the BVN system’s central role in Nigeria’s financial inclusion drive and digital identity framework.
Another major driver, the statement said, was the rollout of the Non-Resident Bank Verification Number (NRBVN) initiative, which allows Nigerians in the diaspora to obtain a BVN remotely without physical presence in the country.
A five-year analysis by NIBSS showed consistent growth in BVN enrolments, rising from 51.9 million in 2021 to 56.0 million in 2022, 60.1 million in 2023, 63.5 million in 2024 and 67.8 million by December 2025. The steady increase reflects stronger compliance with biometric identity requirements and improved coverage of the national banking identity system.
However, NIBSS noted that BVN enrolments still lag the total number of active bank accounts, which exceeded 320 million as of March 2025.
The gap, it explained, is largely due to multiple bank accounts linked to single BVNs, as well as customers yet to complete enrolment, despite the progress recorded.
