Delta NLC Produces Two Factional Chairmen
Delta State chapter of the
Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), has two factional chairmen arising from its delegates conference held on Thursday night in Asaba.
The Delta State President of Nigerian Union of Local Government Employee (NULGE), Mr David Ofoeyeno, defeated his opponent, Mr Goodluck Ofobruku, state Chairman of the Medical and Health Workers Union.
But the incumbent NLC chairman, Mr Williams Akporeha has also laid claim to being returned at a parallel election held at a separate venue.
According to reports Ofoeyeno belongs to the Ayuba Wabbara’s faction of the NLC.
The report also said that the election that produced Ofoeyeno was supervised by the officials loyal to Wabba.
In his reaction, one of the newly elected Vice Chairmen, Mr Jonathan Jemirieyigbe confirmed that there was a parallel election involving Akporeha held at an undisclosed venue in the state.
According to him, the delegates conference which produced Ofoeyeno, himself and other executives in Asaba was the “authentic election”.
Jemirieyigbe said that the Asaba election had the Abuja approval and support, adding that the results from the conference had been taken to the national headquarters of NLC in Abuja.
“And following the declarations of the results and the announcement of the winners at the Cenotaph on Thursday night, we were sworn as the state NLC executives.
“So, today being Friday, we have come to formally resume work here at the Labour House and as you know there is no vacuum.”
Our correspondent also reports that all efforts by the executives led by Jemirieyigbe to get into the Labour House in Asaba were to no avail.
In his post-election speech, the new chairman pledged to work with all members and the affiliate unions to ensure better welfare for the state workers.
Ofoeyeno appealed to the aggrieved persons and indeed all members to give him the necessary support that would enable him to succeed.
