Bursar Seeks Remedy For Economic Meltdown
The Bursar of the Univer
sity of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT), Mr. Vitalis Aliezi, has called for appropriate measures against the global economic meltdown pervading all sectors of the Nigerian economy, including UNIPORT.
Mr. Aliezi , who made the call at the maiden annual thanksgiving service of the Bursary Department held at Chapel of Annunciation, recently noted that given the global economic meltdown, appropriate measures need to be put in place to “minimize the adverse effect of dwindling statutory allocations on the university.”
He predicted more challenges in funding the activities of the university if drastic measures are not applied to tackle the situation at all levels.
Aliezi, therefore, stressed the need for alternative funding sources to meet the ever-increasing demand of universities for revenue to fund their activities.
While elaborating on the reason for the annual end-of-year party and thanksgiving service, the bursar explained that it was the department’s way of showing appreciation to staff for their commitment to duty, and also dedicating a new service year to God’s guidance.
“The bursary department does not only service a governing council, the university management, staff and students, we also service project contractors, local suppliers etc.
“These functions make the bursary department the most frequently visited place in the university, with all the attendant pressures such a situation exerts on our activities.
“That means that what we do as a strategic Department comes under intense scrutiny on daily basis from diverse regulatory agencies and stakeholders,” she said.
