We’ve Contained Cholera Outbreak – RSG
Rivers State Governor, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, says the state government has taken necessary measures to contain the cholera outbreak which has claimed over 20 lives so far in Andoni Local Government Area (LGA).
Governor Amaechi said this yesterday at a health sensitization programme on cholera which held at Ngo Town, Andoni LGA.
Represented by his Deputy, Engr. Tele Ikuru, Governor Amaechi stated that the state government, in response to the situation, set up treatment centres across the LGA with nine Disease Control Centres in nine communities being ravaged by the epidemic to forestall the occurrence of an additional cholera incident.
“We have taken proactive measures to ensure that we do not have additional incident. We cannot afford to lose anymore Andoni lives to cholera. For this reason, we have set up over nine disease control centres and provided free medication and medical personnel to man them. The centres will be managed 24hours till the situation is brought under control,” he said.
Regretting that the epidemic could have been averted had the people been appropriately sensitized, Governor Amaechi stressed the need for traditional rulers and community development committees in the area to embark on massive sensitization of their people to combat the epidemic squarely.
Executive Secretary of the State Primary Healthcare Management Board, Dr. Claribel Abam, blamed the high death rate recorded through the epidemic on ignorance on the part of the natives, adding, however, that government has provided enough medical resources to combat the endemic infection.
Earlier, Chairman of the Caretaker Committee of Andoni LGA, Mr. Emmanuel Ikwut, appreciated the state government for its prompt response to the plight of Andoni people, assuring that the council will provide the necessary logistics to support the state medical team being sent to manage the situation.
The event, which was attended by principal officers from the Ministry of Health including the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Water Resources, traditional rulers and CDC chairmen in the LGA, also featured an interactive session and health talk on how to manage cholera.
