Corruption: TUC Recommends Capital Punishment
As part of measures to ef
fectively tackle corruption in Nigeria, the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUCN) has recommended that corrupt public officials should face capital charges in courts to serve as deterent.
Chairman of the TUC in Rivers State, comrade Chika Onuegbu disclosed this is a press statement as part of his new year message to the people.
The TUC Chairman stated that “an estimated total of N125trn has been budgeted and spent by the three tiers of government in Nigeria since the advent of democracy in 1999, without commensurate impact on the lives of ordinary citizen.”
He attributed the huge gap between spending and direct effect on the lives of the citizenry to “systemic corruption that currently holds the nation in thrall.”
As a result of the deepening corruption in the country he said about 75% of Nigerians are living below the poverty line and more and more people are being pushed into this bracket with increasing cases of unemployment and insecurity in the country.
According to the TUC Chairman, only capital punishment can serve as a strident measure of curbing the growing menace of corruption and bring Nigeria from the throes of poverty.
Commenting on the 2015 general elections, the TUC Chairman, urged the Political Parties to run an issue-based campaign and play the game by the rules and not to make the elections a do or die affairs”.
He expressed worry over the body languages and postures of the political actors which he noted were poised to do battle in the forthcoming election, and called on politicians to learn from the lessons of the past to avoid political miscalculations that would jeopardize the nation’s democracy.
Comrade Onuegbu, also called for revisiting of the voters registration exercise, noting that over 40% of registered voters were yet to collect their Permanent Voters Cards (PVC) stressing that huge chunk of the voting public might be disenfranchised.
The TUC Chairman also restated the commitment of the body to provide direction for labour movement as the umbrella body of all Senior Staffs Association in Nigeria, with other stakeholders, development partners and Government to address labour related issues, and improve the welfare of Nigerian Workers.
