Edo Renames Varsity After Late Akpata
The Edo State Gov
ernment has renamed the University of Education, Ekiadolor, after former Commissioner for Education in the old Bendel State, the late Tayo Akpata.
Governor Adams Oshiomhole announced the decision at the funeral service for the deceased at Central Baptist Church, Benin.
He said immortalising the late Akpata was not because of his wealth, but because of his contribution and advice to the development of the state and society at large.
He explained that the College of Education, Ekiadolor, was upgraded to the status of university of education by the Edo Government in 2014.
“It is now to be known as the Tayo Akpata University of Education.’’
Oshiomhole stressed that the Edo government and people were indebted to the deceased due to his contributions to the state.
“The late Akpata was an example of what a man can do in development. The life of the deceased symbolised a fighting spirit, resourceful as well as intellectual capacity of the Edo people.’’
The governor held that the average Edo man was never contented with self, but will be carrying the burden of others.
Our correspondent reports that Akpata was the Ima of Benin Kingdom and Secretary of defunct Petroleum Trust Fund. He died on October 13 at the age of 83 years.
