UNIPORT Laments Encroachment On School Land
The University of Port
Harcourt (UNIPORT), has appealed to the Federal Government to check encroachment on its land by powerful individuals.
The appeal is contained in a statement issued on Thursday in Port Harcourt by the university’s Deputy Registrar, Information, Dr Williams Wodi.
The statement quoted the institution’s Vice – Chancellor, Prof. Joseph Ajienka as saying that the development had negatively affected the university’s operations.
”The university has informed government severally about the unwholesome activities of land speculators and the need to compensate the university’s host communities, “ the statement said.
It said the compensation was for land which were acquired and gazetted by Rivers State Government and handed over to the Federal Government for establishment of the university in 1975.
The statement said that despite the challenges posed by the encroachment, the university had taken steps to strengthen and sustain mutual relationship with its host communities.
It listed steps taken to include provision of employment, admission opportunities, and skills acquisition programmes for indigenes.
The statement also stated that there was plan to tackle the problem of poor power supply in the university, through partnership with independent power providers, as well as improve street lighting around the campus.
