Delta Spends N5m Monthly On Ex-lepers

Commissioner for Women Affairs, Chief Betty Efekodha, has said that the State Government spends N5 million monthly as stipends paid to rehabilitated lepers in the state.
Efekodha disclosed this in an interview with newsmen in Asaba yesterday.
She said that the Delta Government spent the amount on the ex-lepers in order to enable them take care of themselves and their families.
She also said that the state government had constructed a block of 10 one-bedroom flats for the ex-lepers in Eku, Ethiope East Local Government Area of the state.
The commissioner noted that the completion of the residential building had helped to reduce the challenge of congestion faced by the ex-lepers.
Efekodha said the ministry was responsible for promoting programmes that would help to improve the lives of the ex-lepers and other persons living with disabilities in the state.
“We also oversee the affairs of the mentally challenged persons and they are being taken care of at five different trado-medical homes in the state.
“We also pay the trado-medical homes for taking care of the inmates under their custodies,” she said.
The commissioner said that the ministry had rehabilitated seven ex-lepers’ settlements across the state.
Efekodha said that the state government had earlier established a skill acquisition centre in Eku to enable the inmates acquire skills to help themselves.
