Police Nab 41, Recover 242 Ammunition …As Gunmen Invade Ogoni Community, Behead One

L-R: Minister of State for Health, Dr. Khaliru Alhassan, Minister of Health, Prof Onyebuchi Chukwu and Minister of State 2 for Foreign Affairs, Mr. Nurudeen Mohammed, briefing heads of foreign mission in Nigeria on Ebola Virus in Abuja, recently.
The Rivers State Police Commissioner, Dan Bature has said that the state police command has recovered 242 arms and ammunition and arrested 15 suspected armed robbers and 26 suspected cultists since he assumed office a week ago.
Bature made this known to newsmen while parading the suspected criminals at the state Police Headquarters on Moscow Road in Port Harcourt.
The police commissioner said he would take community policing seriously in order to get rid of acts of crime and criminal elements.
He noted that he would consolidate on the achievements of his predecessor in ensuring the safety of lives and property of residents of the state.
The police chief also stated that a total of 242 ammunitions and 10 bullet-proof vests were recovered within the same period.
“I want to use this opportunity to send a warning signal to kidnappers, cultists, armed robbers, and other criminals that they should either denounce their criminal activities and be law abiding or be ready to face the consequences of their actions”, Bature said.
He also debunked statements that his posting was politically motivated, describing them as laughable.
Meanwhile, armed men, numbering more than 50, have invaded Taabaa community in Khana Local Government Area of Rivers State, and beheaded a youth.
The gunmen also raided the residence of the paramount ruler of the community, destroying properties.
Reacting to the incident, the Deputy Speaker of the Rivers House of Assembly, Leyii Kwanee, who is a native of Taabaa, said the gunmen invaded the community on Thursday and launched the attack on the community.
While blaming the attack on desperate politicians, whom he said were seeking power by all means ahead of the 2015 general elections, Kwanee alleged that the attack was politically-motivated.
He said the remains of the youth that was killed had been deposited in a mortuary, promising to ensure that peace returned to Taabaa community immediately.
The Deputy Speaker also confirmed that the palace of the paramount ruler of Taabaa was destroyed during the attack while residents have deserted the community, seeking refuge in other communities.
