Bizman Wants Speedy Approval Of Confab Report
A Port Harcourt-based
businessman, Mr. Emeka Iwezor has called on the National Assembly to quickly deliberate on and approve the recommendations of the recently concluded national conference when it is brought to the House.
Speaking in an interview with The Tide in Port Harcourt recently, Mr. Iwezor said the call became necessary as the next administration of the country in 2015 need to work with a new statute book that would emerge from the report of the conference.
According to him, “the Confab delegates have done a good job and the best way to appreciate their effort and justify the resources put in is to treat the recommendations with dispatch.
Urging the National Executive Council to ensure the early presentation of the draft report to the National Assembly, he said Nigerians were anxiously waiting for the outcome of the conference which would transform the country and provide better governance.
Mr. Iwezor noted that it was a right decision to send the report to the National Assembly since the nation’s constitution did not provide for referendum on national issues.
“No part of the 1999 Constitution stipulated the holding of referendum on any national issue unless a new constitution provides for it”, he stressed, and tasked President Goodluck Jonathan to prove his mettle and live by his words.
He emphasized the need for President Jonathan to ensure that the relevant and accepted parts of the report were implemented to the satisfaction of the citizens to give them a sense of belonging.
“The onus is now on the president and the National Assembly to give the people the best statute book to operate that would address the numerous problems confronting them”, the businessman said.
Mr. Iwezor opined that the problem of insurgency was a national phenomenon which required the joint effort of all in finding solution to it, pointing out that the support of Northern leaders would go a long way to stop the menace.
