Opobo/Nkoro LGA To Replicate Songhai Farm
The Chairman CTC of
Opobo/Nkoro Local Government Area of Rivers State, Hon Michael Donald Igolima Uranta, has declared his intention of establishing a mini-Songhai farm in the area.
Uranta who revealed this recently, while on a visit to the Rivers Songhai Initiative located in Bunu-Tai, said the idea was to improve the lives of his people through business related agriculture.
Uranta said he planned to send a farmer from his LGA to learn modern methods of farming with a view to making himself reliant.
He said so far he was presenting a boy to learn the ropes as plans were in top gear to increase the number.
“The idea is to expose him to what is here and assist him to establish a mini type in our area.
“That is what I am trying to do, not just for only him, I will still come with more people just to put them through,” he said.
The local government boss said agriculture remained a sustaining and dependable occupation that one could resort to even after retirement.
“The truth is that agriculture is sustaining, it is something that can provide for your daily needs,” he said.
While commending the Rivers State governor, Chibuike Amaechi for the Rivers Songhai Initiative, Uranta said he planned to establish his own farm which will sustain him after retirement from active service.
“For me, I will in future expand on my own because I am seeing agriculture to be a lucrative business and it is something that can naturally earn you a living,” he said.
He further called on workers in the State to go into agriculture after retirement stressing the need for Amaechi’s successor to consolidate on the gains of the Rivers Songhai Initiative (RSI).

The State Director, Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, Dr. Toyin Ayo-Ajayi, during the flag-off ceremony of Inputs Redemption Under The National Agricultural Growth Scheme-Agro Pocket (NAGS-AP), in Ogun State, disclosed that beneficiaries of the gesture were primarily rice, maize and cassava farmers across the State.
Ayo-Ajayi commended the Ogun State Government for partnering with the government at the centre for the effort in supporting farmers with inputs that would bring about yieldings for local consumption and likely exportation.
She noted that government is supporting rice, cassava and maize farmers with inputs worth N212,000; N189,000 and N186,000 respectively.
The Permanent Secretary in the State Ministry of Agriculture, Mrs Kehinde Jokotoye, who represented the Commissioner in the Ministry, Bolu Owotomo, stated that traditional farmers are critical in food production, hence the need to encourage and support them with inputs that would bring about desired results during harvesting.
