Amaechi Hails Rivers Civil Servants
Rivers State Governor, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi says his administration’s partnership with civil servants in the state served as the much needed booster for the unprecedented development now being witnessed across the state.
Governor Amaechi said this last Monday during the 2014 Rivers State Civil Service Day with the theme, “Values and Principles of Public Administration: A Tool for Open Governance” held at the Alfred Diete-Spiff Civic Centre, Moscow Road, Port Harcourt.
Represented by his Deputy, Engr. Tele Ikuru, the governor, who is also the chairman, Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), thanked civil servants in the state for their continued support towards the realization of the policies and developmental programmes of his administration.
“Everything we have achieved has been by your enormous support. Our success story would not be complete without making mention of the very valuable contribution of each and every one of you to the achievements of this administration,” he said.
The governor expressed delight that government’s investments in the service is yielding expected results in terms of improved productivity and service delivery and showered encomiums on the state Head of Service, Barrister Samuel Longjohn, for the numerous innovations and transformation the service is undergoing since assuming office.
In his speech, Chairman of the occasion and Chairman of the Rivers State Civil Service Commission, Sir Ngo Martins-Yellowe, observed that the civil service is the bedrock of continuity in governance, noting that civil servants have, in recent times, become much more efficient and effective in the discharge of government business, regretting, however, the persistence of age and certificate forgery in the service.
Presenting the lead paper for the event titled, “The Proud Public Servant: An Embodiment of Values and Principles of Public Service Administration”, Vice Chancellor, University of Port Harcourt, Professor Joseph Ajienka, represented by the Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Port Harcourt, Professor Henry Alapiki, charged civil servants to safeguard the professionalism, ethics and fundamental values of the civil service and promote administrative culture based on preserving the rights of its users.
Earlier in his welcome address, the state Head of Service, Barr. Samuel Long-John, had said, since assuming office as head of state civil service, measures have been taken to enhance service delivery and output of workers, pointing out that in addition to the regular training and retraining programmes organized for workers, the working environment is being improved on to make it more conducive while welfare of workers have been given top priority.
Highlights of the occasion were presentation of awards and rewards to some retired and still serving civil servants as a way of encouraging proficiency in the service and the launching of the Rivers State Bureaucrat, Civil Service Circulars and State Treasury Papers by the Head of Service.
