A violent attempt was made last Thursday to hijack the leadership of the Khana Local Government Council, by a group known as the Ogoni Central Indigenous Authority (OCIA), leading to the arrest of the group leader, Mr. Felix Kenah by the Police.
The group, which demanded the removal of the council’s newly appointed Care-taker Committee Chairman, Mr. Hycinth Nwiyere, had made a forced entry into the council secretariat with a view to taking over the council.
The group which carried placards with various inscriptions “OCIA must be free”, Ogoni Autonomy is not Negotiable”, premised its demand on the United Nation’s purported recognition of Ogoni as an autonomous state.
The Coordinator of the group, Mr. Felix Kenah, before his arrest told newsmen that the group ought to be in charge of the council secretariat, rather than a caretaker Committee Chairman.
According to him, the group was supposed to be in charge of the legislation of the council, district, and village and also to mobilize the people for the development of the kingdom.
He also said that the Federal government was notified about the activities of the group.
Re-acting to the group, the Chief of Staff, Khana local government council, Hon. Gboelo Smart, said the group which claimed to be a faction of the Movement for the Survival of Ogoni people, (MOSOP) in the area was not known to the council, adding that the group lacked focus and warned the people of Khana to desist from being used by jobless people to perpetrate trouble in the area.
The protest which lasted for four hours, however left a staff of the council injured.
