Ajumogobia Lauds FG On Local Content Implementation
A former Minister of State
for Petroleum Resources, Mr Odein Ajumogobia, has commended Federal Government on its local content implementation bill.
He gave the commendation during the First Annual Women In Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (Women In PENGASSAN) Conference 2014 in Lagos.
Ajumogobia said that the government was well intended in seeing that local content was being pursued in the award of contracts.
He said that government was also ensuring that jobs were being done by competent hands.
He, however, advised that everything must be done to ensure that government agencies were discharging their responsibilities.
According to him, Nigeria should focus on developing indigenous capacity instead of looking for assistance.
The Chairman of PENGASSAN, Lagos State Chapter, Mr Babatunde Oginni, said that divestment had brought woes to labour in the country.
Oginni said that out of 8,300 workers handed over to privatised companies, only 3,100 were working in the mainstream, while majority were casual workers.
He said that some companies were no longer in existence due to privatisation.
National Chairperson, Women in PENGASSAN, Mrs Alice Odum, said that the association was set up to create awareness and encourage women’s participation in the sector.
Odum said the objectives of the association were to ensure a safe and healthy working environment for members.
“To safeguard and protect the job of our members and promote legislation in the interests of our members in particular and Nigeria in general.
“To ensure we are engaged in ensuring sustainability of the industry,” she said.
Odum also said that the association was to encourage mastery in their jobs.
The theme of the conference is “Current Trend/Event in the Nigerian Oil and Gas Industry: Impact on Women Workers.’’
