RSG Orders Sangana Street Traders To Vacate
The Rivers State Commissioner for Enviroment, Nyema Weli, has ordered illegal street traders at Sangana Street, Mile One Diobu, Port Harcourt to vacate the road or face the wrath of the law .
He gave the order while addressing the street traders last Saturday during the sanitation exercise in Port Harcourt.
The commissioner who was represented by the Director, Environmental Sanitation, Health and Safety, Dr Ugochukwu Nmegbu, noted that street trading had been banned in the state and that by Monday any illegal trader found trading on the prohibited street would be arrested and prosecuted, while his goods would be impounded, he added.
He decried poor sanitary condition of the area due to lack of participation in the sanitation exercise by the illegal street traders in the area, regretting that inspite of government’s efforts towards sensitizing the masses on the need to clean their environment, people still lack the awareness of clean up exercise, both at home and business premises.
He re-affirmed that government would not fold its arms and watch few illegal street traders sabotage the laudable efforts of the state government towards restoring the garden city status of Port Harcourt, assuring that it would do everything at its disposal to ensure that the sanitary condition of the state is at its peak.
In his message the state National Orientation Agency (NOA) Director, Oliver Worlugbum, urged the traders to develop the culture of living in a clean and hygienic environment, warning that more arrests would be made on traders who violate the government order.
Similarly, street traders at Bishop Okoye Street, Mile 3, Diobu, Port Harcourt have been charged to leave up to their responsibility by keeping their business environment clean.
The charge was given by the representative of the Environemnt Commissioner, Dr Ugochukwu Nmegbu when the sanitation exercise monitoring team visited the area on Saturday.
He re-affirmed the state government’s preparedness to intensify efforts towards ensuring that the objective of the exercise was achieved, saying that all hands must be on deck to make the dream a reality.

BVN Enrolments Rise 6% To 67.8m In 2025 — NIBSS
The Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System (NIBSS) has said that Bank Verification Number (BVN) enrolments rose by 6.8 per cent year-on-year to 67.8 million as at December 2025, up from 63.5 million recorded in the corresponding period of 2024.
In a statement published on its website, NIBSS attributed the growth to stronger policy enforcement by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the expansion of diaspora enrolment initiatives.
NIBSS noted that the expansion reinforces the BVN system’s central role in Nigeria’s financial inclusion drive and digital identity framework.
Another major driver, the statement said, was the rollout of the Non-Resident Bank Verification Number (NRBVN) initiative, which allows Nigerians in the diaspora to obtain a BVN remotely without physical presence in the country.
A five-year analysis by NIBSS showed consistent growth in BVN enrolments, rising from 51.9 million in 2021 to 56.0 million in 2022, 60.1 million in 2023, 63.5 million in 2024 and 67.8 million by December 2025. The steady increase reflects stronger compliance with biometric identity requirements and improved coverage of the national banking identity system.
However, NIBSS noted that BVN enrolments still lag the total number of active bank accounts, which exceeded 320 million as of March 2025.
The gap, it explained, is largely due to multiple bank accounts linked to single BVNs, as well as customers yet to complete enrolment, despite the progress recorded.
