NPA Assures On Removal Of Wrecks At Ports
The Nigeria Ports
Authority (NPA) Mr. Musa Iliya, has said the authority would always give priority to removal of wrecks hindering its operations at the various ports.
The Assistant General Manager Public Affairs, Mr. Musa Iliya said this in an interview journalists in Lagos, pointing out that the authority was responsible for clearing the channels to ensure smooth sailing of vessels in and out of the ports.
The Tide reports that a wreck is a badly damaged ship.
He said, “from the Act establishing Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), we are responsible for removing the wrecks that are very critical to our own operations, stressing that “Ships must come in smoothly and also sail in a very smooth way’’.
Iliya said that while the NPA was responsible for the removal of wrecks critical to its operations, the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) had the responsibility to receive them.
“All wrecks that block our channel will be our responsibility. But, if you look at the second organisation, NIMASA, it is responsible for the receipt of wrecks.
He said, “So, even when we remove wrecks that are critical to our operations, these wrecks are taken to the dump site and the official receiver is our sister organisation, stressing that, “that is why even in our Act we also remove wrecks’’.
Iliya said that both the NPA and NIMASA maintained a synergy to ensure that the water channels were cleared of wrecks, adding that they understood their individual responsibility.
“We have that synergy between NIMASA and the Nigerian Ports Authority but every organisation knows where its role starts and where it ends.
“So, NIMASA, I am sure, lives up to its own responsibility and we also live to our own responsibility.
“We would not allow wrecks to block our channel. It is just like he who wears the shoe knows where it pinches.
“The responsibility is left to us to look at it. NIMASA would also look at it,’’ Iliya said.
The Tide reports that the NPA’s 2013 third quarterly report shows that from 2006 to 2013, the Lagos Channel Management removed 24 critical wrecks.
It also shows that the Bonny Channel Management removed 14 wrecks in conjunction with the NPA in the course of its channel management for the period.
