Etche Group Seeks $10bn Compensation From SPDC
The Etche Peoples Liberation Congress (EPLC) in Etche Local Government Area, Rivers State has given the Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria (SPDC) 90 day ultimatum to pay $10 billion compensation to the people or risk shut down of its fields in the area.
Addressing a press conference in Port Harcourt last Monday the Congress also ordered all sand dredgers in Etcheland to pay N1 billion to the communities or quit the area within 90 days.
The leader of the group, Mr. Japhet Ogbueri, said that Etche had suffered enough and deserved attention from both the state and federal governments as well as companies operating in the area.
Mr. Ogbueri said that time had come for the Federal Government and the Niger delta Development Commission (NDDC) to capture Etche Ethnic nationality in their policies, programmes, projects and appointments, alleging that Etche was being neglected by the Federal Government.
According to him, “Etche, with a projected one million population, was yet to be captured in the schemes of the Federal Government for over 100 years of amalgation of the Northern and Southern protectorates, and this remained utterly incomprehensible”.
Mr. Ogbueri, who also called for the appointment of Etche sons and daughters into positions of trust, said all abandoned and on-going NDDC projects in Etche and Omuma Local Government Areas should be completed before the end of this year.
While stressing the need for all political appointees to give an account of their stewardship to the people, the group further stressed the need for Etche to produce the next Senator for the Rivers East Senatorial District.
Also speaking, the Principal Information Officer of the congress, Comrade Prince S.A. Onyeche, decried the continuous depletion of Etche environment through gas flaring and other exploration, and production activities.
According to him, Etche would continue to fight against all forms of injustices against its people.
