NUPTE Wants NIPOST Commercialised
The National Union of Postal and Telecommunication Employees (NUPTE) has called for the immediate commercialisation of the National Postal Services.
Speaking to The Tide in Port Harcourt, the union’s president, Comrade Sunday Alhasan, said the commercialisation would promote optimum performance by the nation’s postal service.
Alhasan called upon the Federal Government to inject more funds into the postal services agency for the take-off of the commercialisation of the NIPOST without further delay.
He said “NIPOST should be taken to a level where it could compete favourably with other organisations in the sector, stressing that this could be achieved upon the commercialisation of NIPOST”.
The union leader said that for successful commercialisation, the management of NIPOST should include people with private sector orientation to drive the postal services agency for efficiency and result oriented organisation.
He said the union would not support an outright privatisation of NIPOST as such would not be in the best interest of the nation.
He said “commerciallisation is good for NIPOST not outright privatisation to private hands”.
However, privatisation entails outright relinquishment of part or all of the equity and other interests held by the government or its agencies in such privatised entity including means of production and distribution of goods and services to ensure profitability, accountability and efficiency.
