A’Ibom Indigenes Set For Training In S’Korea
Authorities of the
University of Uyo say five Akwa Ibom indigenes are ready to leave for training in South Korea, on water quality monitoring and sustainable water resources management.
The Chairperson, International Centre for Energy and Environmental Sustainability Research, University of Uyo, Dr Edu Inam, stated this in an interview with newsmen in Uyo recently.
Inam said that the training at the Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology, would help Nigeria to build indigenous capacity in advanced research and technology in water treatment.
She said that the training would also promote exchange and transfer of science and technology between South Korea and Nigeria, to meet the targets of the Millennium Development goals and Vision 20:2020.
She disclosed that the training programme was jointly sponsored by the United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation and Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology, South Korea.
Inam noted that 793 million people around the world lacked access to clean water, and that the two-week training was aimed at providing clean water to Nigerians.
“Permit me to underscore the importance of the training: one in nine or 793 million people around the world lack access to clean water.
“This challenge touches all aspects of development, including health, agricultural productivity, education opportunities of women and children, stability, peace and economic productivity,” she said.
She said the would-be trainees were drawn from different organisations in the state, including the university, and went through a selection process.
Inam said that after the training, the team would establish a water plant in the university.
