Absence Of EFCC Witnesses Stalls Trial Of Oil Marketers
The absence of two prosecution witnesses on Wednesday stalled the trial of three oil marketers charged with N789.6 million fuel subsidy fraud.
Reports say that the marketers; Adamu Maula, George Ogbonna and Emmanuel Morah are standing trial before Justice Lateefat Okunnu of an Ikeja High Court.
They are being prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) alongside their firms – Downstream Energy Sources Ltd. and Rocky Energy Ltd.
The EFCC alleged that the marketers did not import the 10,862 metric tonnes of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) for which they received subsidy payment from the Federal Government.
EFCC Counsel, Mr Rotimi Jacobs (SAN), informed the court on Wednesday that one of the witnesses was absent due to illness while the other travelled.
He apologised on behalf of the witnesses, and asked for an adjournment.
Defence Counsel, Prof. Alfred Kasumu (SAN), did not oppose the application for adjournment.
Justice Okunnu consequently adjourned the case to October 28 for continuation of trial.
