Registered Farmers Receive Inputs In FCT
Registered farmers have started receiving inputs in the 23 FCT Redemption Centres, says Mr Ademoh Isa, the FCT Growth Enhancement Support scheme Coordinator.
Isa said in Abuja that the 2013 GES roll-out would run for six weeks to enable all registered farmers receive their seeds and fertiliser.
According to him, sensitisation is still ongoing to get more farmers to benefit from the programme.
Also speaking a Redemption Officer, Mr Kabir Ismail, noted that the turn-out of farmers to redeem their inputs was encouraging as against the first day the exercise commenced.
According to him, the major challenge is that the data of farmers who registered late was not ready and therefore, farmers in this category could not access their inputs.
‘’The data of farmers who registered recently is not ready so we have told them to check back by on Friday.’’
He explained that the government would give seeds free of charge to farmers while farmers would only have to pay half the price for the fertiliser.
‘’We have linked a good number of farmers to agro-dealers and everything has been going on smoothly,’’ he said.
The GES is the flagship programme under the Federal Government’s Agricultural Transformation Agenda.
It is an innovative scheme which seeks to remove the difficulties usually associated with the distribution of fertiliser and seeds to farmers.
The scheme’s approach is to target beneficiaries through the use of an electronic system known as e-Wallet and also to engage the private sector in the delivery of inputs to farmers.
The conditions of the e-Wallet stipulates that a farmer registered under the scheme pays 50 per cent of the cost of inputs while the Federal and state governments pay 25 per cent respectively.
