Lottery Commission To Arrest Illegal Operators
The National Lottery Regulation Commission has threatened to arrest and prosecute illegal operators of lottery business in Ebonyi State.
The Zonal Coordinator for Ebonyi and Cross River States, Mrs Priscilla Onuzulu, gave the warning last Tuesday in Abakaliki when she paid a courtesy visit to the Ebonyi office of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
“All lottery agents in the country are expected to operate according to the provisions of the Act governing the venture. It is unfortunate that lottery is not popular or religiously embraced in Nigeria,’’ she said.
Onuzulu described lottery as a veritable source of income for individuals and government as well as a key factor for development.
“Lottery generates a greater percentage of employment in the society. I will, therefore, advise affluent Nigerians to embark on the venture.
Although it is not well known in this part of the country just as it is in the west. That is why we are in Ebonyi to sensitise the people on its advantages. We shall prosecute unlicensed agents and assist individuals who nurse grievances over lottery promotions to get redress,’’ she said.
Onuzulu solicited the support of NAN in promoting lottery venture in Ebonyi and the nation.
“Our visit to NAN is imperative due to the unbridled position the agency occupies as the foremost news dissemination channel in the country. We are trying to stamp our presence in the state and needs news channels such as NAN to adequately propagate our messages to Ebonyi people. Ventures such as lottery are alien to Ebonyi people due to the level of literacy and exposure of the citizens,’’ she said.
According to her, the commission would carry out a comprehensive enlightenment programme to educate the people on the inherent opportunities in lottery business.
“The commission ensures that there is no manipulation in lottery services, as the outcome is determined by chance.
In his response, Mr Nick Nicholas, the State Correspondent of NAN in Ebonyi, commended the commission for the initiative and pledged the agency’s support in the promotion of its ideals.
“NAN is an internationally acclaimed news medium that reports and disseminates news fairly and with utmost objectivity.
“Your partnership with NAN would ensure that your ideals and programmes will be disseminated to all parts of the state and country in general,’’ he said.
Nicholas advised the commission to be proactive in enlightening the people on the benefits of lottery in order to achieve its aims and objectives.

BVN Enrolments Rise 6% To 67.8m In 2025 — NIBSS
The Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System (NIBSS) has said that Bank Verification Number (BVN) enrolments rose by 6.8 per cent year-on-year to 67.8 million as at December 2025, up from 63.5 million recorded in the corresponding period of 2024.
In a statement published on its website, NIBSS attributed the growth to stronger policy enforcement by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the expansion of diaspora enrolment initiatives.
NIBSS noted that the expansion reinforces the BVN system’s central role in Nigeria’s financial inclusion drive and digital identity framework.
Another major driver, the statement said, was the rollout of the Non-Resident Bank Verification Number (NRBVN) initiative, which allows Nigerians in the diaspora to obtain a BVN remotely without physical presence in the country.
A five-year analysis by NIBSS showed consistent growth in BVN enrolments, rising from 51.9 million in 2021 to 56.0 million in 2022, 60.1 million in 2023, 63.5 million in 2024 and 67.8 million by December 2025. The steady increase reflects stronger compliance with biometric identity requirements and improved coverage of the national banking identity system.
However, NIBSS noted that BVN enrolments still lag the total number of active bank accounts, which exceeded 320 million as of March 2025.
The gap, it explained, is largely due to multiple bank accounts linked to single BVNs, as well as customers yet to complete enrolment, despite the progress recorded.
