BMH Treats 9,000 Patients Monthly
Over 9,000 patients are treated monthly at the Rivers State-owned Braithwait Memorial Specialist Hospital (BMSH), Port Harcourt.
The Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Dr Ijuye Olukunmi, who said this in an exclusive interview with The Tide in her office, also said that the hospital does not reject patients.
She said that there is a limit to what the hospital can do as far as admission of patients is concerned.
Dr Olakunmi said the hospital is a referral centre to all the health institutions both private and public in the state, but regretted that most patients preferred that the hospital to other health centres and hospitals built by the government.
“We serve as a referral centre to all the health centres, general hospitals and all the private hospitals, but there is a limit that our facilities can carry.
“Hospitals are never open ended, that is why, they say a hospital is built to take such number of beds. For every hospital, there is a limit, she said.
The Chief medical director said that most patients after treatment, always feel reluctant to leave, stressing that this attitude has denied others the opportunity of using the hospital facilities.
Olukanmi also said that people need to be sensitized to avail themselves of other health facilities provided by the government such as the newly built and commissioned K. C. Harrison Hospital, Diobu and other health centres built across the state by the Chibuike Amaechi-led administration, pointing out that it is the only way of reducing the pressure on BMSH.
Meanwhile, the chief medical director has aid that the hospital does not reject patients, adding that those that cannot be handled by the hospital for certain reason are referred to the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH), Choba, for proper care.
“We don’t reject patients. What the hospital does is to refer them to other hospitals such as the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH),” she said.
The CMD used the occasion to commend the Rivers State Primary Healthcare Management Board for ensuring that health centres built by the government live up to expectations.
