FCT Earmarks N40m For Gwako Victims’ Rehabilitation
The Minister of FCT, Senator Bala Mohammed, on Monday in Abuja, said the territory had earmarked N40 million to resettle and compensate victims of Gwako 1 village, Gwagwalada Area Council.
Mohammed announced this while receiving the report of the fact-finding committee set up to look into the clash between the Fulanis and Gwaris in Gwagwalada on December 24, 2012.
He said the fund would be removed from the money meant to curtail flood disaster in FCT. Mohammed said the report made some recommendations to address the clash and to avoid future reprisal attack.
He said it came up with recommendations that the victims should be resettled in their former habitation, following the return of peace to the area.
According to him, the long term recommendation is that Fulanis must be given a grazing land for their cows, as provided in the Abuja Master Plan.
The minister said the committee also recommended that vehicles should be provided to return the displaced fulanis to their homes, to ensure their safety.
“The Fulanis and Gwaris have come to realise their mistakes and the fulanis are more anxious to leave the university permanent site and go back to their communities,’’ he said.
Meanwhile, the minister has set up a nine-man committee to implement the report.
The Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, Aderele Shinaba, who is the chairman of the fact finding committee, told newsmen at the venue that the problem, which arose from grazing on land in the area, had been “calmed”.
Shinaba said that the committee suggested sensitisation of the affected communities through radio jingles, especially during the planting and harvest seasons
“With the investigation conducted, there is no political undertone in the Fulani and Gwari clash,’’ he said.
Shinaba said the committee averted reprisal attacks from “freedom fighters” in the neighboring Cameroon, Katsina, Kano and Edo states.
He stressed the need to reconcile the groups and punish the culprits, to avoid future occurrence.
The police boss said that 25 suspects had been arrested, adding that investigation was on-going.
