Edo LG Polls Hold April 20
The Edo Independent Electoral Commission (EDSIEC) on Tuesday officially released the time table for the conduct of the local government elections scheduled for April 20, in the state.
The Commission’s Chairman, Mr Solomon Ogoh, who released the guidelines for the elections at the stakeholders’ meeting in Benin on Tuesday, called on the political parties to adhere to the provisions of Sections 22 and 23 of the Electoral Law 2012.
The sections provide that, “candidates must be nominated in writing by 10 registered persons whose names appear on the voters’ register in the Ward in the case of a councillor, and 20 registered voters in the case of chairman and vice-chairman respectively”.
He reminded the political parties that they were not allowed to change or substitute candidates whose names had been submitted to the commission pursuant to Section 27 of the Electoral Law.
The only exception was when the candidate withdraws or dies.
Ogoh pledged that the commission would conduct elections that would become a reference point not only in Edo but in Nigeria as a whole.
