Association Urges FG To Rehabilitate Seaports Infrastructure
The Chairman, Shipping Association of Nigeria, Mr Val Usifo, has urged the Federal government to rehabilitate infrastructure at the seaports.
Usifo told newsmen in Lagos that infrastructure, particularly those in Lagos and Port Harcourt ports should be upgraded.
“The job on the road network at the Lagos ports should be fast-tracked because it is taking too long,” he said.
He commended the plans by the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) to collaborate with some state governments to open up new deep sea ports. Usifo said that the deep sea ports being constructed would reduce the burden on the Lagos ports.
The chairman said that the new sea port projects should not be slowed down at all and should be carried out through Public Private Partnership (PPP).
Usifo said that he expected government to put in place a law to legitimatise the on-going port reform in 2013.
He also commended the Single Window platform being adopted by the Nigeria Customs Service, stressing that it would facilitate trade, competition and 48-hours cargo clearance.
“The Federal Government needs to do a lot to tackle security challenges in the ports and the nation as a whole. Security challenges like piracy impacts negatively on the maritime industry and on the nation as a whole,” he said.
Usifo, who was the pioneer Chairman of Ports Industry Anti-Corruption Standing Committee (PIACSC), advised government to expedite action in selecting a commercial regulator for the ports.
“Since the PIACSC was disbanded by the NPA, there has been nothing in place to replace it. We pray for a commercial regulator which is long overdue from which people in the industry can seek redress and which will also moderate service delivery. It will be an avenue for people to lay their complaints,’’ Usifo said.
He urged government agencies and other operators at the nation’s ports to cooperate with themselves and their customers.
