WASCE: FCT Students Record 38.39% Credit Pass
Students in the FCT in 2012 scored 38.39 per cent credit pass in five WASCE subjects, including English and Mathematics, the FCT Education Secretary, Alhaji Kabir Usman, has said.
He disclosed this on Wednesday in Abuja at the 2012 Education Media Luncheon, saying FCT students had improved when compared with the 2011 result of 20.42 per cent credit pass.
Our correspondent reports that WAEC conducts the West African School Certificate Examinations (WASCE).
Usman attributed the improvement to employment of more teachers in the relevant subjects and ensuring that teachers put in more efforts for the success of their students.
He said inadequate infrastructure had affected the school system in the FCT in the past.
“This has been our experience in the school system, especially in the area of congested classrooms, empty libraries and laboratories.
“These problems, I am happy to say, are being tackled with a provision of infrastructure, including schools, classrooms, hostels, sporting facilities, among others in 2012,’’ the Education Secretary said.
He said government had constructed over 2,000 new classrooms for the basic and senior education levels.
Usman added that a total of 28 additional new schools were established across the six Area Councils of the territory.
According to him, the FCT administration had also ensured that all schools have a functional computer laboratory with interconnectivity to enable online registration in 52 public senior secondary schools.
He however said the FCT Education Secretariat did not only pay adequate attention to quality of teachers but also trained them regularly.
“In collaboration with the British Council, 200 English teachers were also trained under the Teaching Knowledge Test,’’ Usman said.
