Under-graduate Wins Calabar Carnival Essay Competition
A Student of the Department of English and Literary Studies,
University of Calabar, Mr Augustine Edung
has won the Tertiary Institutions’ Category of Calabar Carnival essay
competition.
Edung scored 64.6 points to win the star prize
of a laptop, books, N70, 000 and a plaque.
Miss Enomfon
Akpan of Margaret Ekpo Secondary School, Calabar, scored 67.4 points to win the
Secondary Schools’ Category with a laptop, books and a plaque.
Five secondary
schools that also received laptops and books were Margaret Ekpo Secondary
School, Calabar, Hill Crest School, Calabar, St. Anne’s High School, Calabar,
West African Peoples’ Institute, Calabar and Community Secondary School,
Adadama.
The wife of
the Acting Governor, Mrs. Glory Cobham, who represented the wife of the
governor, Mrs. Obioma Liyel-Imoke, lauded Governor Liyel Imoke’s commitment in
ensuring quality education in the state.
“The
Government of Cross River State has created an enabling environment for
children through various programmes such as free primary education,
refurbishing and equipping of schools and award of scholarship to deserving
children, “ she said.
Cobham said
that her aim for initiating ASFAC (A Society Fit for A Child) was to complement
her husband’s efforts in creating an enabling environment for children to
thrive and realise their potentials.
She said that
the essay competition was to test the children’s performances and expressed
happiness that the event was yielding fruits.
The
governor’s wife also extended greetings to all the children during the yuletide
and advised those who did not win in this year’s competition not to be
despaired but rather prepare adequately for next edition.
The Calabar Carnival Chairman, Mr. Gabe Onah, described the
exercise as another year of mental challenge, and said the essay competition
which was sponsored by Golden Penny Company was to institutionalise reading
culture.
