Customs Impounds 10,000 Bags Of Rice
At least 10,000 bags of rice worth millions of naira have been impounded by men of the CGC’s special squad of the Nigerians custom service.
The seizure was made at Badagry coastal water by a team led by Chief Superintendent Abdullahi Darhiru Kirawa.
The team leader said the ship load of rice was intercepted at the high sea based on the intelligent network gathered; adding that it was possible for his men to suppressed the smugglers because of the joint efforts of the western marine command of the customs and the federal operation unit.
According to him, the rice has been evacuated to Government warehouse ikeja, pointing out that the economic Soboteur contravened section 46 (A) of the customs and Excise management ACT (CEMA) cap 84 of 1990.
Kirawa reiterated that rice remained banned in the landed border and any smugglers who dire to test the strength of his men who regret, as the squad would not relent on fighting the dire hard smugglers to standstill. He appealed to the general public to willingly assist the customs with information about the movement of suspected smugglers, the easier it would be to confront them and be in the position to rid the nation of anti-economic activities.
It is of the view of many officers that the squad could do better if the customs Headquarters can provide it with adequate facilities to ease its operations against smuggling activities.
The Tide correspondent authoritatively revealed that Dearth of communication facilities remain one of the obstacle of the anti-smuggling squad but when confronted on these issue, CSC kirawa said the comptroller General of customs,Alhaji Inde Dikko was conscious of such problems and has put everything in order including brown new patrol hilux vans to monitor all routes and Creeks.
Since his deployment to the CGC’s anti-smuggling squad early this year, notable marks have been made on issue of anti-smuggling in the high sea, border routes, while strategies were been mapped out to nip such Malaise in the bud.
