Flood: Bayelsa To Spend N5bn On Schools
Bayelsa
government, says it has earmarked N5 billion for the renovation and
reconstruction of all public schools affected by the recent flood in the state.
Gov Seriake Dickson
announced this Monday at the
monthly transparency news conference in Yenagoa,
He said the administration was determined to rebuild all
infrastructure affected by the disaster, including schools.
“Now that the flood is gone, the challenge of rebuilding our
public infrastructures affected by the flood has just started. “We must put our
schools back on track so that we can build education as a foundation for the
development of our state,’’ he said.
Dickson said N3.5 billion had been released to the state
Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) to begin the project across the eight
Local Government areas.
According to him, another N1.9 billion has been released to
contractors handling various ongoing school projects in the state, including
the ongoing model schools and a boarding system, starting with St. Jude Girls
Secondary School, Yenagoa.
“Let me state here that for this November, our investment on
education will be over N6 billion; as a government, now is the time to rebuild
our flood-impacted infrastructure so that we can move forward.’’
The governor said that additional N1.9 billion would be
expended in November on the health sector, for the renovation and completion of
all community health centres across the state.
He said he had authorised payments for all the ongoing
contracts in the health sector, adding that the State Government also
authorised a forty per cent mobilisation fee to the contractors.
Gov Dickson later directed the state Deputy Governor, Chief
John Jonah, to present the state’s financial position for two months running,
from September to October.
