MDGs: C’River Assures On Improved Water Supply
The Cross River Govern ment says it is set to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) on water supply with the creation of a specific Ministry of Water Resources in the state.
Mr Elemi Etowa, the Commissioner of the ministry, gave the assurance in an interview last Thursday in Abuja.
The commissioner said the ministry was established in response to donor agencies’ demands and the need to improve water supply to meet the Millennium Development Goals in the country.
“The Federal Ministry of Water Resources with other donor agencies had insisted that a dedicated ministry in the state would champion the cause for water development.
“Cross River will be better positioned with the ministry in place because the few states that have had it all these years function better.
“The state just completed a European Union-funded water supply programme and for us to be able to continue with those partners, the partners insisted they want to work with the Ministry of Water Resources to be able to deliver .’’
He urged states yet to create independent ministries of water resources to do so, saying that it was necessary for the efficient management of water resources and the sourcing of funds from development partners.
On the ministry’s plans for the next six months, Etowa said the ministry had been given the mandate to redouble its efforts at meeting MDGs.
“We know how backward the country is in terms of meeting the Millennium Development Goal objectives; so our mandate is to deliver the objectives in the water sector by 2015; that is what we are out for in the short term.”
Etowa said that access to potable water was critical to the development of the country and that the state government would not relent in its effort to deliver the goals.
“We want to transform the entire state. As I speak, Cross River State is the number one state in terms of water supply services; we are leading the nation.
“The World Bank refers many countries such as Ghana to Calabar to come and study what we are doing.
