Govt To Build More Health Centres, Schools In Diobu
Rivers State Government is poised to build more health centres and model primary schools in the Diobu area of Port Harcourt.
Governor Chibuike Amaechi gave the assurance while playing host to traditional rulers under the aegis of Port Harcourt Council of Chiefs in Government House, Tuesday, in Port Harcourt.
The governor lamented that so far, the existing health centres and primary schools were not sufficient to meet the needs of the huge population in the area, stating that government was constrained by the problem of land to deliver the projects.
He observed that in the whole of Diobu area, there are only two model primary schools and three health centres, saying, “you can’t count Sacred heart as one of the primary schools because the place is too congested. The only primary school we have in Diobu is St. Andrews with four primary schools and that hall can only take not up to 1,500, but when we took over the school, there was over 2,600 sttudents”.
Amaechi declared that, “We will do more if given the opportunity. And the opportunity we want from you is that we are looking for land. We need to build two more health centres; one at Mile 3 Park or market and another one between Illoachuchi and Ojoto, so we can reduce the pressure on existing health centres”.
He disclosed that soon, government will start furnishing the hospital built in the campus of the Rivers State university of Science and Technology, since it is meant to serve both the public and the school community.
Listing other projects sited in the area, Governor Amaechi stated that the Prof. Kelsey Harrison hospital at Emenike would begin operations once agreement was concluded with the foreign company that will manage the facility.
The governor, however, solicited the chiefs support to assist government in accessing land in the area adding, “while we wait for that, we will want you to give us land to build more primary schools and health centres”.
