Minister Tasks Stakeholders On Employment
The Minister of Works, Mr Mike Onolememen, has appealed to stakeholders in the construction industry to partner with government organisations to address unemployment in the country.
Onolememen made the appeal in Abuja last Tuesday at the opening of the 56th Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Federation of Construction Industry (FOCI).
The minister, who was represented by Mrs Ijeoma Unogu, the Director of Research and Statistics in the ministry, said that the construction industry had a strategic role to play in helping to address unemployment.
He said that areas such as electrical and civil engineering, building and equipment handling/servicing, facility and plant management, and other forms of labour in the sector, were some areas that jobs could be generated from.
“It is the agenda of this government to encourage all investors to partake in activities that would give our youths employment.
“I know that this may not be their preoccupation, but we want to encourage more of our people in some of their activities.
“There is nothing that our youths cannot do as far construction is concerned, so my appeal is for them to do more in terms of employment.”
Onolememen charged FOCI to look into the standard of work and quality of equipment used by some construction companies to ensure that government get value for money spent on projects.
He said that government would not condone cases of sharp practices by some contractors who compromise safety for selfish gains.
Onolememen reiterated government’s commitment in providing an enabling environment for investors to recoup investments in the sector in spite of the challenges of security in some parts of the country.
Earlier, President of FOCI, Mr Mobolaji Williams, called on the private sector to improve its collaboration with government at all levels to deliver on the transformation agenda.
Williams said that the provision of employment and infrastructural development were key to the actualisation of the transformation agenda.
According to him, the federation will provide the link between major equipment dealers and local contractors to ensure quality service delivery.
Our correspondent reports that the event also featured an exhibition by equipment dealers, construction giants and other service providers in the construction industry, both within and outside the country.

Kenyan Runners Dominate Berlin Marathons
Kenya made it a clean sweep at the Berlin Marathon with Sabastian Sawe winning the men’s race and Rosemary Wanjiru triumphing in the women’s.
Sawe finished in two hours, two minutes and 16 seconds to make it three wins in his first three marathons.
The 30-year-old, who was victorious at this year’s London Marathon, set a sizzling pace as he left the field behind and ran much of the race surrounded only by his pacesetters.
Japan’s Akasaki Akira came second after a powerful latter half of the race, finishing almost four minutes behind Sawe, while Ethiopia’s Chimdessa Debele followed in third.
“I did my best and I am happy for this performance,” said Sawe.
“I am so happy for this year. I felt well but you cannot change the weather. Next year will be better.”
Sawe had Kelvin Kiptum’s 2023 world record of 2:00:35 in his sights when he reached halfway in 1:00:12, but faded towards the end.
In the women’s race, Wanjiru sped away from the lead pack after 25 kilometers before finishing in 2:21:05.
Ethiopia’s Dera Dida followed three seconds behind Wanjiru, with Azmera Gebru, also of Ethiopia, coming third in 2:21:29.
Wanjiru’s time was 12 minutes slower than compatriot Ruth Chepng’etich’s world record of 2:09:56, which she set in Chicago in 2024.
