91 Suspected Oil Thieves Charged To Court
The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps(NSCDC), has charged about 91 suspects to court over illegal bunkering and illegal peddling of petroleum products.
Spokesman of the corps in Rivers State, John Olubuah made the disclosure in a press statement by the agency, saying, the suspects were being prosecuted in a Federal High Court in Port Harcourt.
The NSCDC Public Relations Officer stressed that the security agency was bent on checking the menace, hence, the intense monitoring and arrests by the body in recent times.
He stated that the high number of suspects stemmed from various raids and arrests carried out in the last one month and half while noting that, “ the corps is apprehensive of the geometric increase in the number of youths invloved in the nefarious act in recent times’’.
The NSCDC spokesman lamented that though the security out fit had intensified monitoring over the years, the activity seemed not to be abating, “you may recall that the corps had earlier issued a quit notice to all those involved in vandalism and illegal oil bunkering to leave the state or invest their energy into legal business or face the full wrath of the law. ‘’
Olubuah revealed that investigations carried out by the agency revealed that some of the youths were, however, willing to engage in lawful activities, but had resorted to illegal bunkering as a way to make quick money.
He appealed to companies, especially oil firms doing business in the state to collaborate with the NSCDC in evolving measures to stem the vice through the creation of employment opportunities.
Calling on all vandals to desist from the act, Olubuah assured that the corps would not relent in making the state unconducive for oil thieves and those peddling petroleum products indiscriminately.
