RSG Tackles Child Abuse, Rape Cases
As the state joins other countries to mark
Children’s Day, the Rivers State Commissioner for Social Welfare and
Rehabilitation, Hon.Joe Poroma, says the Governor Chibuike Amaechi-led
administration has declared zero-tolerance for child rape and abuse.
Hon. Poroma gave the assurance while
speaking to newsmen shortly after a church service to mark this year’s
Children’s Day titled, “Let’s Build a Culture of Peace and Security for the
Nigerian Child ,’’ yesterday in Port
Harcourt.
He sued for collaboration between parents
and teachers to ensure that children were properly brought up as future leaders
of the society.
One major area he noted was being tackled
by the present administration was child hawking, as he called on parents and
guardians to desist from such vice or face the wrath of the law.
He submitted that other child welfare
schemes were being initiated by the government, while calling on civil society
groups to support the efforts of the administration, especially by reporting
cases of child rape and abuse to the ministry.
Hon. Poroma further said,’’ besides
hawking, there are other crimes which are even worse than hawking. We have rape
and it is on the rise and other forms of abuses that are going on’’.
The Commissioner noted that as at present,
there were various cases of child abuse
and rape the Ministry was prosecuting in courts, and called on the citizenry to
be alert of such vices.
Commenting on activities to mark this
year’s Children’s Day, he stated that the celebration would commence with a
quiz competition, excursions, while the main march past was fixed for Monday
28th May since the main day falls on Sunday.
Earlier in his sermon at the church
service, Apostle Zilly Aggrey stressed on the need for discipline and exemplary
life in the upbringing of children.
He maintained that biblical principles
remain the only timeless path to good nurturing of children, saying, ‘’we must
teach our children the value of dignity of labour’’.
Other highlights of the church service
include bible reading by children parliamentarians, special prayers for peace
and security of children by clerics.
