UNIPORT Graduates 5,756 14 In First Class
The University of Port Harcourt says it will graduate a total of 5,756 students, with 14 graduands passing out in first class degrees, when the 28th convocation of the institution holds this Saturday.
A breakdown of the figure shows 817 passing out in Second Class Upper Division, 1,468 in Second Class Lower Division, 308 are for Third Class while 78 students are to graduate in Pass Degree category.
The Vice Chancellor of the institution, Prof Joseph Ajienka, disclosed this to newsmen over the weekend in Port Harcourt as part of activities kick-starting the convocation programme.
Prof Ajienka also said that Mr Boma Tubotamuno of the Department of Economics emerged the overall best graduating student in the undergraduate category with a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 4.78 on a scale of five points.
Out of the 14 First Class graduands, he said six are from the faculty of Humanities, three from Science, two from Faculty of Education, Department of Linguistics and Communication Studies and Educational Psychology, Guidance and Counselling produced three First Class graduands each, while Faculties of Engineering and Social Sciences also have one first class each.
Similarly, a total of 1,083 are to obtain the post-graduate degrees from the various faculties, 47 students for Master of Arts, 248 Masters of Science, 132 Masters of Education, 7 Masters of Engineering, six Masters of Engineering Management, 70 Masters of Business Administration 22 Masters of Petroleum Engineering and Project Development (IPS), while 98 candidates will be conferred with Doctor of Philosophy degree.
Prof Ajienka said the university would for the first time honour four distinguished scholars for meritorious services to the institution as emeritus professors in recognition of their exemplary academic records.
They are Prof Nimi Briggs, Department of Obstetric and Gyanenacology, Prof Otonti Nduka, Educational foundation, Prof Emmanuel Anosike, Biochemistry and Samuel Okiwelu, Animal and Environmental Biology for being icons in academics.
In the same vein, three prominent Nigerians would be conferred with the university’s honourary doctorate degree for their exemplary philanthropy and contributions to the institution. They are Mr Egbert Imomoh, chairman Afren Energy Services, Atedo Peterside, chairman Stanbic-IBTC Bank Plc and Dr Alex Otti, Managing Director, Diamond Bank Plc.
