Lawmaker Sues For Improved Funding Of Media Houses
As the Rivers State House of Assembly begins final preparation for the passage of the 2012 Appropriation Bill, the lawmakers have been urged to consider increased funding for the state media organisations to enable them discharge their duties creditably.
The Chairman, House Committee on Information, Hon Onari Brown stated this yesterday while presenting the committee’s report on the budget proposal for 2012 for the information sector.
Hon Brown noted that the committee’s interaction with the heads of various departments and parastatals in charge of media management of the state showed serious under-funding for years and more worrisome was the non release of funds to these departments in recent times.
He explained that the state Television and Radio Rivers needed outside broadcasting vans and other equipment to meet the target for all electronic media to be digitalised as specified by the Broadcasting Organisation of Nigeria (BON).
The lawmaker noted that the state Newspaper Corporation, publishers of The Tide needs a rotary machine for the effective production of the newspaper, stressing that the earlier budgetary provisions for that purpose were not released.
He emphasised the need for the lawmakers to save the newspaper corporation from collapse, pointing out that today the media outfit produces three times a week as against the daily production.
Hon Brown said the good work the state government was doing would go unnoticed if the state media houses were not properly equipped to disseminate information to the rest of Nigerians and the diaspora.
According to him, the needed foreign investors would come to the state only when they are abreast with happenings around here and the job of informing them rests in the domain of the media establishments.
In his speech, the Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Hon Otelemaba Amachree lauded the committee for its report and advised those yet to present their reports to do so during the next sitting to enable the House facilitate the passage of the 2012 budget.
Other committees that presented their reports include Transport, Commerce and Industry, Water Resources, Inter Party Affairs, Secretary to the State Government, Head of Service, Works, Greater Port Harcourt Authority and Power among others.
