Govt To Develop Landfills In Port Harcourt
The Rivers State Government says it will soon develop a landfill and transfer stations to check the improper disposal of refuse in the state.
The Commissioner for Environment Dr. Nyema Weli who disclosed this during a meeting with refuse contractors in his office last Friday also said that the landfills will be developed in areas that will be accessible to the contractors.
Dr. Weli also said that the government is working out modalities to ensure that the process of refuse collections are disposal are streamlined.
According to him, the process when concluded will provide opportunities for the contractors to benefit maximally from the system.
Dr. Weli also said that the process will ensure job security for the refuse contractors, while guaranteeing them early payment of their money.
The Commissioner who expressed dissatisfaction with the attitude of the contractors however urged them to brace up as Port Harcourt and its environs must be kept clean always.
According to him, the issue of environmental cleanliness must not be left to the government alone.
Also speaking the Director Environment and Health, Mr. Napoleon Ewhule urged the contractors to devise a system of refuse management that would not involve the government.
In their separate speeches, some of the contractors urged for more dumpsites, and decried the attitude of residents of the city who are in the habit of dumping refuse indiscriminately on the streets.
