Fake Bulbs: Nigeria Loses N500m Annually –SON
Nigeria loses N500 million annually to fake and sub-standard electric bulbs, the Director-General of the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON), Dr Joseph Odumodu, has said.
Odumodu, who made this known in Abuja yesterday said that the money lost would have been useful if deployed to the provision of infrastructure.
He said that the standard for electric bulbs was about 1,000 hours but lamented that sometimes the bulbs would not last for more than two weeks.
“Nigerians have a right to ensure that no bulb will last for less than six months, the standard for bulbs is about 1,000 hours and today we all know in our homes that sometimes the bulb will last for just two weeks, sometimes a bit more, the study I did revealed that Nigeria loses over N500 million every year on bulbs.
“So my message to Nigerians is, one, we must understand our rights, but more importantly, we must always take action.’’
The director-general urged consumers to always find out the lifespan of electric bulbs before buying them to avoid buying sub-standard ones.
He advised Nigerians to feel free to return electric bulbs that did not last up to one month after purchase for replacement, noting that if the shop owner refused to change them, the matter should be reported to SON or to the Consumer Protection Council (CPC) for proper action.
“Like I said, we are here to ensure that we give Nigerians a new lease of life and that is what we are committed to and we will deliver on it by the grace of God.’’
Odumodu said that Nigerians had been taken for a ride for too long and assured them that the new management of SON was fully committed to ensuring that Nigerians received succour.
He expressed delight that cooperation between the SON and the CPC had been wonderful, adding that both agencies were working together to safeguard the Nigerian consumer from substandard goods.
Odumodu also commended the Nigeria Police for its cooperation and support which had made SON to achieve so much in its fight to rid the country of substandard products.
