Enugu LG Bars Loitering
The Igbo Etiti Legislative Council in Enugu State has passed a bye-law barring youths from loitering between 6 a.m. and noon.
The Leader of the legislative arm of the council, Mr Titus Ejili, told newsmen in Enugu yesterday that the law was timely and necessary.
Ejili said the bye-law became imperative at this time considering the level of crime being committed in the area.
He expressed regrets that youths within the age bracket of 12 to 25 years could come out as early as 6 a.m. to be loitering about along the various bus-stops, doing nothing.
According to him, the youths often looked out for people going to their lawful businesses and in some cases attacked market women and made away with their belongings.
“So, the legislative arm of the government finds it imperative to make a law to put a check to this ugly menace.
“Another law we have made is a law to stop those celebrating a ceremony from blocking the major roads within the council area.”
“You know customary in the Igbo culture, funeral ceremony is a big ceremony that showcases the culture of our people and in most cases people are being carried away by the euphoria of this celebration.
“So, in many areas we have been getting reports that in the course of this celebration, those people celebrating it will just come out to the major areas, especially the major roads, blocking it, cutting palm trees, banana trees and some other things in the name of celebrations.
‘’So all those things lead to accidents.’’
He explained that such attitude often led to accidents and some times disturbed commuters plying those roads from going about their normal businesses.
Ejili urged the people to celebrate their ceremonies in their compounds.
