Jega Slashes INEC Budget By N7bn
Chairman , Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Attahiru Jega, has been commended for his adherence to the current national economic situation and the necessary ‘belt tightening’ measures as the commission slashes its proposed expenditure for the year 2012.
The Commission had earlier drafted a proposal of N54,055,582,356.63, which the Chairman , Jega cut down to N47,361,974,562.97.
The commission’s budgetary allocation for 2011 was N52.2billion, indicating an over N5billion decrease for the year 2012.
The Senate Committee on INEC made the commendation after the commission’s presentation of its budget proposal for this fiscal year at budget defence exercise in the National Assembly yesterday.
Within the 2012 INEC budget proposal of N47.4billion, personnel cost has 14,308,525,816.67 as against N16,116,938,292 of the previous year, N3,294,660,405.20 is for overhead against N4,147,049,391 while the recurrent expenditure was reduced from N24,801,481,540 in 2011 to N18, 447, 164,572.30 this year.
In line with the government reformation agenda, the commission however, significantly increased its capital budget, from N7,114,878,288 in 2011 to N11,311,623,768.80 in 2012.
According to the INEC Chairman, the cut down in budget proposal was in line with the prevailing economic situation of the country which clearly calls for significant reduction in cost of governance to enable the Federal Government tackle “series of challenges confronting the nation at the moment”.
His words, “Nigeria faces many challenges and as patriotic citizens, we need to be mindful of these challenges and try our best always to do things that are in the best interest of our country. We are no doubt aware that strengthening democracy is a priority, electoral reforms, which will help strengthen democracy are priorities that require adequate funding but whatever we request in terms of funding for the electoral process, we do our best to put it in the context of other competing national demands”.
He noted that INEC ordinarily would have loved to have more funds to enable it improve on the electoral process in the country but considering other national interests, the commission saw the need to cut t down its budget.
Earlier, in his speech, the Acting Chairman of the Committee on INEC, Senator Jajere Alkali Abdulkadir, said the Commission had given good precedence to other ministries and parastatals.
Senator Abudulkadir however noted that such was expected of Jega as ‘a man of integrity’.
