30 VVF Patients Get Free Treatment
No fewer than 30 women suffering from Vesico-Vaginal Fistula (VVF), have received free treatment at the Fistula Care Hospital in ogoja, Cross River State.
the Chief medical Director (CMD) of the hospital, Dr. Barth Egebe has said in Ogoja that those treated were among the 50 patients registered at the facility.
The CMD also said that specialists from some government hospitals in the state carried out the operations.
He expressed the appreciation of the hospital to the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and other stakeholders that sponsored the operations and the training of personnel.
‘The training was to enable us to engage in a surgical and post operation management of fistula, including anaesthesia.
“USAID has actually done a lot for us. They supplied a number of equipments; they have also carried out further training of some selected health officials in family planning and counseling”.
Egabe stated that the hospital would carry out similar operations by February.
Dr. Adamu Isah, the Deputy Country Director of an NGO, EngenderHealth, which is partnering with the hospital, said the mortality rate in fistula operations was very low, and encouraged women suffering from the disorder to patronise the facility.
“Fistula surgery is safer and generally the mortality is very low and the patient can still be pregnant after repairs, which is free in our facility”, he said.
