EFCC Nabs Mile One Market Boss Over N38m Scam
Officials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), on Monday arrested the Chairman of the Administrative Committee of Mile One Market Traders Association (MOMTA), Chief Y.O.C Georgewill over alleged embezzlement of N38.2million belonging to the association.
A source told The Tide that operatives from the Port Harcourt office of EFCC stormed the Mile One Market at about 9.00am in a Haice bus to effect the arrest.
The source said that two of the nine officials who came to effect the arrest were armed, and in police uniform. It was learnt that the chairman wanted to resist the arrest on the ground that the officials were not known to him, and insisted that they go to the Mile One police station for proper identification.
The EFCC officials, it was learnt agreed to his terms and opted to go to the police station after which Georgewill was taken away to the commission’s office.
At the market, The Tide gathered that the action of the EFCC officials was based on a petition it received from traders of the market over allegation of financial impropriety involving Chief Georgewill.
Speaking to The Tide on the issue, the second Vice Chairman of the Administrative Committee, Chief Stainless I. Emenike said a petition signed by him and the General Secretary, Chief Godwin Eleji dated 22nd September, 2011 was sent to the EFCC’s Head of Operations in Port Harcourt on the matter.
According to him, the said sum of N38,260,000 (Thirty eight million two hundred and sixty thousand naira) belongs to the association and was generated between July 2007 and September 2010.
Emenike said that efforts to make Chief Georgewill account for the money proved abortive, alleging that the chairman and his cohorts rather threatened them with police arrest.
The action of Chief Georgewill, he said, informed their decision to take the matter to the EFCC.
Efforts to reach Chief Georgewill for comments were not successful at the time of filing this report, as he was still in EFCC’s custody.
