Amaechi And The Governors’ Forum
The association of Nigerian state governors is known as Governors Forum. This association became so powerfully pronounced and strong during Umaru Musa Yar’Adua’s illness in far away Saudi Arabia. Nigerians were worried about the long absence of their president. The absence of late President Yar’Adua caused a lot of political problems that made the Governors’ Forum to assume the position of king makers in Nigeria.
The timely intervention of the Governors Forum despite some open criticisms against their unconstitutional activities, laid to rest some administrative anomalies witnessed in the country.
Today, every Nigerian waits for the Governors’ Forum decision before issues of national interest are implemented. The Governors’ Forum is in the vanguard of purposeful leadership in Nigeria. Some disturbing national issues cannot stand if the Governor’s Forum does not endorse.
Governor Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi succeeded his predecessor, former governor of Kwara State, Bukola Saraki. Immediately he assumed the position as chairman of the Forum, he strengthened the body. He also works with all the governors irreespective of party affiliation.
The prolonged deliberation on the minimum wage was an issue that made the Governors’ Forum very popular. When the Federal Government endorsed the N18,000 minimum wage, the Governors’ Forum quickly swung into action to see how to implement it. Indeed, the N18,000 minimum wage did not go down well with some state governors who saw it as a way to undermine the development of their states. Series of meetings were held by governors to address whatever might be the after effects of the implementation of the minimum wage.
Governor Amaechi is the spokesman of the Governors’ Forum. The peaceful resolution of issues by the Forum under the chairmanship of Amaechi is worth commending. Indeed, Rt. Hon. Amaechi is one of the youngest governors in Nigerian politics. But his leadership strategies and qualities in Rivers State where he governs are unprecedented in the history of the state and portray him as an intelligent leader. Amaechi is a dogged administrator who does not believe in failure and disappointment in governance.
The Governors’ Forum enjoys unity where understanding exists among members. However, the issue of the new minimum wage would have caused division amongst members, but the way the leadership dialogued with members brought everything under control.
It is true that the Nigerian constitution does not in any way support the formation of Governors’ Forum. The Forum does not derive its powers from the constitution. It is a forum for governors to exchange ideas. From indications, Governor Amaechi may be happy to be the chairman of the body as Rivers State is seen in some quarters as a state that experiences rapid development. The Governors’ Forum headed by Rt. Hon. Rotimi Amaechi should as a matter of fact sensitise its members to embark on people-oriented policies that would transform their various states.
I think the forum is a pressure group which position influences the Federal Government. And that is why the Governors’ Forum must be led by persons who have the interest of their people at heart. The Forum intervened when the Nigeria Labour Congress wanted to embark on an indefinite strike action. The timely intervention and peaceful dialogue led to the suspension of the strike action by the NLC.
The Governors’ Forum has done well to some extent. Though, some governors who are members of the Forum are performing below expectation in their states. Some governors who have performed below expectation in their electioneering promises should be sanctioned. The Governors’ Forum has come to stay. Therefore, the activities of the Forum should be streamlined to meet the need of the populace.
The revenue accruing from federal allocation and the oil wind-fall which state governors receive should be used for meaningful development in the states. The Governors’ Forum (if Nigerian factor is not considered as priority) can be an agent of development in this democratic dispensation. Governor Amaechi should be just and have the fear of God. He should take the Forum to an enviable height. Nigerians expect good governance from all the governors.
