Opposition Parties Allege Irregularities In Lagos Council Polls
The National Publicity
Secretary, Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) Mr Rotimi Fashakin, said in Abuja on Tuesday that the council election in Lagos was marred with irregularities.
Fashakin told The Tide that the election was not free and fair.
On Saturday, October 22, Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) conducted local council election which from the results released so far, the ruling party won the majority seats.
Fashakin said: “The election was not free and fair and from the reports we are getting from our men on ground there was attempt to change the result of two councillorship seats that CPC won at the polling stations in Agege” he said.
He said there would not be much outcry on the election that was free, fair and credible.
Fashakin expressed dissatisfaction over comments credited to LASIEC Chairman retired Justice Adeyinka who said that any party that was not satisfied with the outcome of the election should go to the tribunal.
“ Any party that is aggrieved with the result should go to the tribunal, it is not for me to ask people to go to the tribunal, he should only make sure that justice was done,” Fashakin added.
Fashakin declined to make further comments on the CPC‘s next line of action in respect to the election, which, he claimed, was not free and fair.
Meanwhile the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) on Monday announced the result of the council polls held on Saturday.
Protests had trailed the delay in announcing the results with the Lagos PDP alleging that it was deliberate so as to forge the result.
But announcing the result to newsmen at about 6p.m on Monday, LASIEC’s Chairman, retired Justice Abdul-Fatai Adeyinka, said the ACN won the Chairmanship positions in the 20 Local Government Areas and the 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) where elections held.
Adeyinka also announced that out of the 376 wards in the state, the ACN won 355, PDP 18, and Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) grabbing two wards.
He also said that the exercise was inconclusive in Ward H in Mushin, adding that the Commission would set a new date for a re-run in the ward.
However, the Commission upturned earlier result announced by its Returning Officer for Badagry Central Chairmanship slot in which the PDP was declared winner.
The LASIEC Chairman declined comments on this development but said parties with grievances should appeal.

LP Crisis: Ex-NWC Member Dumps Dumps Abure Faction
Mr Ojukwu, who recently returned to the interim National Working Committee led by Senator Esther Nenadi Usman, noted that the party had 34 elected members in the House of Representatives, eight Senators, and 80 members at the state Houses of Assembly after the 2023 general elections.
“Now we lost all of them,” he said. “I don’t think we have as many as five members in the National Assembly.”
The former national officer of the LP talked to journalists in Abuja and said he chose to join the caretaker committee led by Senator Nenadi-Usman because they are now the officially recognized leaders of the Party.
“I chose to work with the caretaker committee to help save the Labour Party, for the benefit of the party. I also want to use this chance to ask my colleagues at the national, state, and local government levels to come together and help rebuild our party.
“Another election is around the corner. We lost everything we have. They have left to other political parties. So I’ll reach out to all my friends in the other group to get together and work on making this party stronger again.
“The caretaker committee has formed a reconciliation committee. Let’s come together and talk so that we can restore the first opposition political party in Nigeria.”
Mr Ojukwu, who was part of the Julius Abure’s group, said there are no more factions in the LP.
He added, “There is a court ruling, and since it is valid, the right people are in the correct positions.”
He urged Barr Abure and others to drop the legal cases they have filed because they are not helping the party.
“Litigations are killing political parties”, he said. “They’ve seen many political parties disappear because of legal battles, and the Labor Party is losing support every day, which makes me feel sad.”
Mr Ojukwu said he did not think joining the Senator Nenadi-Usman’s NWC was a betrayal of the Abure group, describing himself as “the oxygen” of that faction.
“I’m with this group because of the verdict. But I never betrayed anybody. Rather, I was betrayed,” he added.
